ASSISTANCE TO LIBRARIES FUNDS – Application Guidelines

PURPOSE

To assist disadvantaged groups in establishing or enhancing library services within their communities. The project is supported by and administered through BCLA.

GUIDELINES

  • All projects should be library, information service, education support, museum, and/or archives related
  • A benefit to an identified disadvantaged group within the community must be demonstrated
  • Project should be community-based
  • The organisation requesting funds should be non-profit
  • The project should be able to show that funding for the specific need identified is not readily from other major government or organisational sources
  • The project must not compete with but may complement existing projects or services in the immediate area
  • General administration and staffing costs generally will not be funded

GEOGRAPHICAL BASIS

  • The Assistance to Libraries Fund aims to make funds available to international and BC – based organisations referred to here as “major projects
  • International projects must have a Canadian partner
  • Minor funding is available to BC based organizations and for additional funding for expressed needs for major projects (see below)

FUNDING CRITERIA

  • Each major project can apply for up to $10,000.00
  • LIBRARIES ACROSS BORDERS GROUP, ASSISTANCE TO LIBRARIES FUND reserves the right not to fund the full request and to provide partial funding for more than one project within the $10,000.00 limit
  • Minor requests (conference attendance, training/workshops etc) of up to $500.00-$1000.00 each
  • Funding will be provided on a one-time request basis although additional requests can be made for an expressed need not addressed in the original application. ALF will consider such requests upon receipt of required reports of the originally funded project and a description of the additional need
  • International projects must have a Canadian partner organisation or persons that are verifiable and/or registered as a NGO/charity and show a history of good governance. No funds will be available for Canadian partner administration
  • Funding for major projects may be issued in installments subject to receipt of required information through reports

APPLICATIONS

  • Application forms can be obtained through British Columbia Council for International Cooperation and other community group networks and soon on the Libraries Across Borders website, or by requesting them from the Project Coordinator – Libraries Across Borders Group, Assistance to Libraries Fund (librariesacrossborders@gmail.com).   • Applications for funding for minor projects can be submitted at any time by letter outlining the purpose, the cost and date funds required.

REPORTING

  • All projects must be able to show a definable and verifiable need at the time of request for funds
  • Reporting in written and/or pictorial form on the use of funds and the benefit these funds have provided will be required every 6 months or sooner depending on the amount of the grant and whether installments are part of the funding commitment
  • Minor projects must supply a short written report within a month of funds use
  • Canadian partners will report and receive communication on their sponsored projects through their offices
